The P waveforms studied here will be nearly unaffected by small variations in the orientation of the shallow dipping plane. The depth distribution of this earthquake is difficult to determine from the P waveforms of the mainshock. Hence, we have looked at other evidence to estimate the depth of seismic coupling in the Prince William Sound region. TICHELAAR and RUFF (1993) systematically determined the depth of moderate size underthrusting earthquakes located at the down-dip edge of interplate aftershock zones in subduction zone in order to determine the depth of the seismically coupled zone.

The TACT results show that the interplate contact dips at a shallow angle from the trench to approximately 35 km beneath the northern edge of the Chugach Terrane where the dip then steepens (Furs and AMBOS, 1986; FUIS and PLAFKER, 1991). The aftershocks are well trenchward of the 50 km depth contour of the Wadati-Benioff zone as well as the mains hock epicenter suggesting that much of the rupture was shallow (Figures 1 and 2).
