Superimposed deformation One of the great challenges in structural geology is working out multiple phases of deformation, each of which may have a different character and orientation. In shields and mountains each phase of deformation imparts a new set of structures that overprint or even obilterate older structures. Glaciotectonic structures display similar possibilities.
