At their proximal ends, in depths shallower than 3000 m, the avalanches are in the form of ﬂat-bottomed steep sided chutes, where erosion and down-slope transport predominate. At the heads some of the chutes are low relief ridges aligned parallel to its axis. These highs may be due either to scour or to compression created by velocity differences between adjacent ﬂows. The distal ends of some of the chutes are characterized by a series of convex down-slope steps that may be the creation of a series of overlapping ﬂows, or represent local exposures of massive basalt levels.

Possibly the origin of the scarp on the upper slope may have a simpler explanation. If it is a plane of separation it would imply that as the avalanche traveled down slope it broke apart into two or more segments with the upper one being perched on the ﬂank of the subaerial segment of the volcanic ediﬁce. Another factor that controlled the physical aspects of inshore/offshore composite avalanches is the location of the volcano whose collapse contributed to the avalanche.
