Even as more overt forms of discrimination lessen, we need to move beyond the motives of decision makers, to examine how ascriptive inequality is reproduced in the academic workplace. As Bielby (1991: 185–6) points out, eliminating such barriers may be ‘more difficult than dismantling [other forms of] exclusionary practices’. Ascriptive inequality is reproduced in everyday workplace interactions that occur within a hierarchy of gender status beliefs that tend to advantage men and disadvantage women.
