Much of the sulfur is not involved in crosslinks between chains. Moreover, such networks are unstable and have poor aging resistance. In order to increase the rate and efficiency of sulfur crosslinking, accelerators are normally added.

The most common silicone elastomer is polydimethyl siloxane (MQ) with methyl substituent groups on the polymer chain. It has a Tg of –127 °C.
