When writing her life story in the early 1980s she was a university graduate in her late 30s, and a teacher at an alternative high school in the centre of Sweden. At her own school she had initiated feminist studies and was involved in the women’s movement of the 1970s. She was married with one daughter. Karin was unusually outspoken concerning hidden conflicts; verbalizing what many women in her cohort were more vague about: I feel that since I had children, I have been constantly cruising between women’s liberation and the demands of working life on one hand, and the responsibility for home and family, on the other.

The FWTAO, as Rebecca Coulter tells us in her contribution to this volume, has only recently yielded to pressure to amalgamate 34 ALISON PRENTICE with its male counterpart, after more than seven decades of existence as a unique force in Canadian education and gender politics. In British Columbia, in contrast to Ontario and Quebec, the shift towards a predominantly female teaching force began in towns and spread only slowly to rural areas (Barman, 1990).
