As each approach has its strengths and weaknesses, one should know when to use which method. 1 Mediation The word “mediation” is derived from the Latin “mediare”. The goal of mediation is that conflict participants autonomously develop a sustainable solution for the future which corresponds to their interests and needs. This is facilitated by a goaloriented, structured phase model, by need-oriented discussions and by modification of the parties’ communication patterns.

Managers often aspire to the ideal of being a successful, strong-willed executive, who can personally solve all problems. What would colleagues say if it became known that he had drawn on external support to resolve a conflict in his team? Company culture plays an important role here. Is bringing in external support a sign of weakness? At the end of the day, what counts is how successfully a team or department carries out its functions and the quality of its contribution to the success of the company.
