That is why two central questions are facing us here. First, which are the factors that can help explain the transformation of the Bulgarian Communist Party in the new democratic situation—factors which, in addition, have contributed to its success, at least in comparison with all other former Eastern Bloc counterparts? Second, which factors in the course of that transformation led to the crisis trends that found their most distinct expression in the early 2010s? The context of the Eastern Bloc system, marked by its belonging to the Soviet sphere of influence, constitutes a starting point and basis of comparison.
When in November 1990 the new Sejm passed a law for the forfeiture of assets of the former ruling party, it was SdRP that this law affected. And it was SdRP that participated in suits regarding those assets in the following 10 years. SdRP entered the political stage as a largely mechanical aggregate of reformist PZPR leaders, a small group of party MPs, as well as local party structures that had nowhere else to go. At least initially there was no common ideology involved. The role of binding glue for the diverse camps within the party was played by the fierce anticommunism then prevalent in Poland, which brought those camps together.
Those skills inherited from the past were lacking in most newly created competitive anti-communist formations, constituting a political advantage not to be underestimated.  Finally, there comes the opportunity (already mentioned by Bozoki and Ishiyama in the wok cited above) for successor parties to capitalize on the palpable achievements of the old regime, in particular—the guarantee of minimal social protection for everyone. The course of development of ideas upheld by CSPs after the end of communist regimes has also become the subject of many studies.
