To make it work you have to have a process by which ethical issues are managed, measured and reported back on. bp takes ethics seriously in its approach. There is a set of business policies covering five areas – ethics, environment, employees, relationships, finance and control. David Rice, director of the policy unit and chief of staff government and public affairs, indicates that ethics actually goes beyond the one area that they call ethics: All of the policies together are about ethical behaviour, which means doing the right thing.

Acceptance of the legitimacy of stakeholder interests is gaining ground. 19 The new languages of corporate social responsibility, ethical business behaviour, customer service, social justice, corporate governance, labour relations, community development and lifelong learning are all reflections of the same concept: responsibility towards stakeholders. Signs of change are also encompassed in new actions. The consumer is more aware and more demanding than ever. Globalisation has brought increased prosperity to many, but it has become the focus of antibusiness protesters, who see it as helping rich countries at the expense of the poor.

New economy, new ethical dimension The new economy is changing the world of work and the people who work in it fundamentally. Technology, globalisation, intangibles and the war for talent are all driving the new economy and helping to create new corporate paradigms. In the new economy, business models can be seen as groupings of assets (or stakes) and businesses will need to be accountable to each asset owner (or stakeholder) in some kind of mutually agreed way. Wider accountability involves a wider ethical dimension that businesses must grapple with, and with this comes a greater risk of ethical conflicts that can damage an organisation.
