Supplying adequate nitrogen, however, can be a balancing act. It is the key ingredient for luscious, verdant gardens, but too much can cause pest, quality, and environmental problems. a common culprit in water pollution, making streams, rivers, and oceans inhospitable to fish. For established gardens, lawns, or trees, a soil test is a great check on maintaining and building soil fertility over time. Test vegetable and other annual gardens every two to three years and perennial gardens, trees, and lawns every three to five years. These periodic tests let you correct imbalances from over- or underfertilizing. Because we don’t often know the compositions of organic residues or manures, a soil test can prevent unintended nutrient buildup or deficits in the soil. Soil tests are best taken at the end of the summer or in the fall before the next year’s growing season.

Dig a small trench, about 6 inches deep, at the surface of your soil. Break apart the soil and look for residues. Put your nose in there, too, and take a good whiff. Moisten a bit of the soil in your hand, rub it between your fingers, and see if it leaves a dark stain. A good quality soil will have plant residues in various stages of decomposition, some pieces you can recognize and some pieces you can’t recognize. You want the soil to leave a dark stain on your fingers when wetted. This is the organic matter that has broken down into bits too small to see individually.
