Lean, Sustainable Capitalism. Making money selling products at a penny at retail means that businesses serving BOP markets have no margin for error. They must operate with extreme efficiency, and their business models must be ingeniously well-crafted. For large multinationals, scaling down takes discipline, but most can afford to absorb some losses while they get the model right. Local entrepreneurs, however, often start at the bottom. They need to figure out ways to make money under conditions of extreme scarcity from day one.

I selected these cases on the basis of extensive research and conversations because they effectively illustrate the larger concepts that were common across many of the organizations I studied. Subsequent to my research but prior to the publication of this book, some of these companies and individuals received attention from the international community, including invitations to the World Economic Forum at Davos and the TED Conference, and coverage in the media—so it’s comforting to know that I was not the only one impressed by their ideas.
